The bicoloured shrew occurs scattered all over Flanders, but the number of occupied
squares is low (27 %). Based on the number of 5 x 5 km-squares with barn owl pellets searched
and bicoloured shrews found, the bicoloured shrew is especially rare in the province of Antwerpen,
a slight bit more common in Limburg,Oost-Vlaanderen and Vlaams-Brabant, and most common
(but still not very) in West-Vlaanderen. In West-Vlaanderen, especially the East Coast and the
adjacent woodlands around Brugge have a high occupation. The species is remarkably absent in
the south of the province of Oost-Vlaanderen and in large parts of Antwerpen and the eastern
part of Vlaams-Brabant.
Looking at the percentage of squares with barn owl pellets searched and bicoloured
shrews present, there is a decline over time in nearly all provinces (in total 36 % occupied in 1964-
70), especially in Oost-Vlaanderen. A large part of the old data in Oost-Vlaanderen though originate
from the Waasland regio, which was not studied now, so the decline may be less severe than
seen here. In the province of Antwerpen the species seems to have disappeared from the Lier regio.
Only in Limburg an increase in the percentage of occupied squares occurred. Otherwise there
were no large changes in distribution. In both periods, the percentage of bicoloured shrews found
in barn owl pellets was very low.
