In Flanders, as in the rest of Europe, the West European hedgehog occurs almost everywhere. Its distribution is well known, due to the large amount of road kills. In comparison with the seventies, the population seems to have increased even more. It is not clear though, whether this is due to a real increase in numbers, or a higher effort to map the distribution of this easy to see (especially because of the many road kills) animal.
